
We’re officially through five days at the 2025 IIHF World Championship after eight nations played their third game of the tournament with Canada and Germany looking to remain undefeated, both of whom had an opportunity to climb into the first spot in Groups A and B, respectively.
Slovenia (2) vs Latvia (5) F
Coming into Day 5 at the IIHF World Championship, Slovenia was the only team remaining in Group A that hasn’t registered a point in the standings and standing in their way on Tuesday was Latvia, who was coming off a tough 7-1 loss to Canada on Sunday. Marcel Mahkovec got Slovenia on the board first early in the second period before Latvia rattled off three straight to take a 3-1 lead, including two goals 21 seconds apart. 31 seconds after Latvia took a 3-1 lead, Blaz Gregorc brought Slovenia within one and then 49 seconds later, Boston Bruins prospect Dan Locmelis restored his nation’s two-goal lead. After a wild 1:43 in the second period, the first 14 minutes of the went scoreless until Eduards Tralmaks scored Latvia’s fifth of the game, sealing a big three points for them and boosting their chances of making it to the playoff round.

Norway (2) vs Germany (5) F
After starting the tournament 2-0-0-0, German got a massive offensive boost on Tuesday as they officially registered Tim Stutzle, who was slotted into the team’s 2C hole for their game against the 0-0-0-2 Norwegians. Norway got a boost of their own too with Detroit Red Wings 2024 first-round pick Michael Brandsegg-Nygard making his tournament debut today. Despite losing their first two games, Norway has been kept each game close and looked to do the same against Germany, but didn’t get off to the greatest start, allowing a goal less than five minutes into the opening frame. Germany would extend their lead to 2-0 later in the first period before former NHLer Andreas Martinsen got Norway on the board. The Germans would add two more in the second period thanks to Wojciech Stachowiak and former Owen Sound Attack forward Joshua Samanski to take a 4-1 lead to the dressing room after 40 minutes. Jacob Berglund picked up Norway’s second of the game less than halfway through the third period, but it wasn’t enough Frederik Tiffels iced it with an empty netter to give Germany their third win of the World Championship with a final score of 5-2.

Canada (5) vs France (0) F
Canada was back in action on Tuesday as they took on France, a team that upset them via a shootout win at the 2014 IIHF World Championship in Belarus. After starting Dylan Garand and Marc-Andre Fleury in their first two games of the tournament, Hockey Canada officially registered Jordan Binnington in time for him to take to the crease for Tuesday’s game. Binnington backstopped Canada to a 4 Nations Face-Off title in February and is looking to solidify his role as their starting netminder for the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy. Bo Horvat and Will Cuylle scored for Canada in the opening frame, while Sidney Crosby picked up his first World Championship goal in ten years on the powerplay in the second period. Bo Horvat scored again in the third period to give himself the tournament lead in goals with four, while Brandon Montour added a fifth for Canada, his first-ever while wearing the Maple Leaf. Jordan Binnington wasn’t tested too much in the game but turned aside all 15 shots he faced for his first career shutout for Team Canada.

Kazakhstan (2) vs Hungary (4) F
Kazakhstan and Hungary wrapped up the action in Group B on Tuesday with both teams looking to avoid dropping in the standings and ending up close to the regelation spot. Hungary was ready right from the moment the puck dropped at Jyske Bank Boxen, stunning the Kazakhs by taking a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes. Nikita Mikhailis brought Kazakhstan within one 4:32 into the second period, giving his nation some life heading to the third period. 14 seconds into the final frame, Hungary restored their two-goal lead and a little over three minutes later, took a 4-1 lead thanks to a goal from Peter Vincze. Late in the third, Kazakhstan went to the powerplay looking for to crawl back into the game and with 59 seconds left in the period, Valeriy Orekhov scored their second of the night. Hungary would hold on to that 4-2 lead to pick up their first win of the 2025 IIHF World Championship and their first regulation win in the the top division since May 14th, 2016 when they defeated Belarus 5-2.
