If you’re a fan of offense, then Day 7 of the 2025 IIHF World Championship was a fun one, with a total of 29 goals between the four games in Stockholm and Herning, with some memorable moments for Finland and Switzerland as they continue to put themselves in a prime position to advance to the playoff round.
The early games of Day 7 saw Finland take on Slovenia in Group A, while Group B’s matchup featured Germany and Switzerland, with both nations looking to stay in the hunt for top spot. It’s been 31 years since we’ve seen a 4-goal game at the IIHF World Championship, but that changed today, as Finland’s Eeli Tolvanen and Switzerland’s Sven Andrighetto both put four in the back of the net in their respective games. Meanwhile, Finnish forward Teuvo Teravainen tied a IIHF World Championship record for most assists in a game with six.
In the last two games of the day, Canada looked to remain undefeated against an Austrian squad that gave them fits last year, while David Pastrnak and Czechia had an opportunity to climb into top spot in Group B with a regulation win over Hungary.
Finland (9) vs Slovenia (1) F
Coming into action on Thursday, Finland has had a pretty underwhelming tournament. They narrowly defeated Austria in their opener, almost lost to France in their second game, needed to come back late to force OT, where they won and in their third game, they lost a tight one to their Nordic rivals Sweden. On the other side of the ice today was a Slovenian team that is the only team in the tournament not to pick up a point in the standings, which doesn’t bode well for their chances of remaining in the top group for 2026.
Today’s game wasn’t close, at all, with Finland scoring 9 goals, the most by one team in a game so far at this year’s World Championship. As mentioned, Eeli Tolvanen scored four goals, while Teuvo Teravainen had six assists. Five members of Finland’s roster had multi-point efforts. With the loss, Slovenia remains last place in Group A, with games against Sweden, Austria and France remaining in the preliminary round. It will likely come down to that France vs Slovenia game to determine relegation in Group A.

Switzerland (5) vs Germany (1) F
In a battle for top spot in Group B, Switzerland and Germany faced each other in the early game in Herning, Denmark, with the Germans turning to former Barrie Colts goaltender Mathias Niederberger rather than Seattle’s Philipp Grubauer for this important contest. After a scoreless opening frame, Switzerland starting pouring it on the second period, with former Montreal Canadiens and Colorado Avalanche forward Sven Andrighetto picking up a hat trick through 40 minutes to give his nation a 4-0 lead heading to the third.
Andrighetto wasn’t done there as he added a fourth just over eight minutes into the third period to make it 5-0 Switzerland. Swiss netminder Leonardo Genoni came very close to recording his second shutout of the tournament, but Jonas Muller has other plans, putting Germany on the board with 1:25 remaining in the game. With the win, Switzerland jumped from fourth to first in Group B and they were hoping to remain there for the entirety of Day 7, but with Czechia set to face Hungary in the night game in Herning, the odds of that happening were quite slim.

Canada (5) vs Austria (1) F
After last year’s 13-goal thriller which saw Austria come back from a 6-1 deficit in the third period to force overtime, Canada was hoping for a bit of an easier game on Thursday. It wouldn’t start that way however, with Austrian netminder Florian Vorauer, who making his World Championship, stopped all 23 shots he faced in the first period.
Montreal Canadiens prospect Vinzenz Rohrer scored for Austria to give them a 1-0 lead heading to the dressing room. Nathan MacKinnon scored early in the second period on the power play to tie the game at 1-1 before adding a second later in the middle frame on a 6-on-5 with a delayed penalty. MacKinnon’s shot on his second goal was registered at a whopping 164 km/h, which translates to 102 mph. Canada would go on to score three more in the third period courtesy of Travis Konecny, Will Cyulle and Sidney Crosby and picked up their fourth win of the tournament. Despite the loss, Florian Vorauer was fantastic, making 47 saves on 52 shots, doing all he could to keep the Austrians in the game.

Czechia (6) vs Hungary (1) F
After seeing Switzerland take over top spot in Group B earlier in the day, David Pastrnak and the Czechs were determined to get into first and standing in their way was a Hungarian team that is coming off their first regulation win at the IIHF World Championship since 2016.
The majority of the first period was scoreless until Pastrnak picked up his third of the tournament to put Czechia up 1-0. Just under two minutes later, Jakub Flek extended Czechia’s lead to 2-0 heading into the first intermission. Czechia added a third just before the halfway point of the second period, but Hungary’s Andras Mihalik scored to cut the lead to two. The Czechs, much like Canada, scored three in the third period, including David Pastrnak’s second of the game, to put this contest to bed and giving them a 6-1 win to remain undefeated.
